What is a Keyword?

How do keywords help you to rank effectively on Google? Well planned keywords can propel your business to the top of search rankings.

We hear this all the time when we are building a webpage. The keyword is the most important thing you need to know if you want to build an effective website. A keyword is not just a word but it can also mean a phrase. Essentially it is what people would type into the Google search bar to find what they are looking for.

For a person who is looking to purchase a new condominium project, he may search for “New Project Launches” on Google or “Buying a New Condo”. Thus essentially if you had a property website, you would want to rank favourably for these keywords.

If you were providing home painting services, you would want to appear prominently on Google for keywords such as “home painting services”, “paint my house” or “home painter”.

Essentially your keywords should be what you think your potential customers are going to type into on Google.

Keywords are essential to any effective website because they inform Google what your website is about. This allows Google to show your website to the right customers. Every page on a website should have a keyword or a set of keywords attached to them. For example, if you were an online grocery store you would want people who are searching for fresh produce to be directed to the respective page on your website rather than the home page. Every page should have one or more keywords. However, having too many keywords will dilute their importance as significance is divided among the number of keywords. The maximum number of keywords a page should have should be 5.

Keywords also need to appear on the page title and meta description. They should also appear prominently in the content on the page itself. If these points are adhered to, your website should rank high on Google. The page rankings will take time to update so you should be able to track your webpage progressing to the front few pages of Google search for your keywords. Do remember that every blog post is also considered a page to Google and you should also follow these rules for every blog post.
