I have been patronising Chong Qing Grilled Fish since their first outlet at Mosque Street. (They have a 2nd outlet at Liang Seah Street)
Their flagship product is grilled fish served in Chongqing hot pot. There’s a whole list of additional ingredients that you can order and have them added to the hot pot. (vegetables, spam, noodles etc)
There are several options to the soup base for the hotpot. We would always go for the 香辣 (fragrant spicy). There’s also a non-spicy version for those who are unable to take spicy food.
Recently, they have opened their 3rd outlet at Serangoon Gardens. In line with their new opening, they are running a promotion whereby there’s 20% of total food bill with a minimum expenditure of $80.
Compared to the other 2 outlets, the seats are well spaced. You will feel more comfortable.
We ordered a large grilled fish + side dishes, tofu skin salad and sliced beef in hot chilli oil.
Even for a large portion of the fish, we were only given half a fish. Barely enough for the 4 of us. I think the portion is at best good for 3 pax.
The tofu skin salad is rather disappointing. It’s overly salty. It does seem like the blend of sauce wasn’t done right.
Sliced beef in chilli oil is decent. Would have liked the beef to be more tender.
All in all, the quality was not quite up to expectations. Am not sure if this is a one-off due to it being newly opened. Definitely, doesn’t quite taste like the standard I have had at the Bugis and Mosque Street outlets.
Total Damage including 4 beverages: $94 nett (after discount)
Verdict: Can try if you are in the vicinity. Hopefully, they get it up to scratch soon.
